The Traditional Indian System of medicine,Ayurveda is the art of living in harmony with nature. The term Ayurveda is taken from the Sanskrit word "Ayur" meaning life or lifespan.The word "Ayur" literally means "life" and "veda", the Science or Knowledge.
Siddha medicine is one of the oldest medical systems known to mankind. Contemporary Tamil literature holds that the system of Siddha medicine originated in Southern India, in the state of Tamil Nadu as part of the trio Indian medicines- Ayurveda,Siddha and Unani. Siddhars, mainly from Southern India laid the foundation for this system of medication. Siddha medicine means medicine that is perfect. The word Siddha comes from the word "Siddhi" which means an object to attain perfection. Siddha system is largely therapeutic in nature.
Ayurveda and Siddha gives medical relief to a very large section of population. People from the rural areas used to be benefited by it, but now awareness has been created among the urban who prefer these systems of medicines today as they have no side effects. The majority of India’s population uses Ayurvedic medicine exclusively or combined with conventional Western medicine. Since Independence, the Governments of various states have appreciated the importance of these systems and taken measures to encourage their use and even give them a scientific foundation by stimulating research on modern scientific lines.
These drugs, derived from herbs, were used by the Vaidyas. They were mostly culivated in gardens all over the country and the time of collection, the parts used, methods of curing and preserving were well known. The student of Medicine used to live with his Guru in the Gurukulas and received practical training in connection with the identification of these herbs and the proper time of their collection. In the course of time, more and more vegetable herbs growing in different parts of India were gradually included. The rich herbal resources of the vast sub-continent and varying climatic zones with variety of vegetation and their exploitation in the interest of the suffering humanity became important. The object of these drugs is to counteract the imbalance of three essential elements Vata[Air], Pitta[Bile] and Kapha[Phlegm]. These three elements constitute the Tridose from which the human body originates. It is common knowledge that some species or herbal drugs is known by more than one name in Sanskrit and other Indian languages.
